The spring has started, which can only mean one thing… season. The Millbury Varsity baseball team is back and ready to continue off of their very successful 2018 season where they made a run to the district semifinals where they had a tough loss to Hudson which marked the end of the road for 9 seniors. This year, the team is coming back with only 3 seniors, captains Tim Cunningham and Mason Broyles as well as Drew Hamilton.

With many new faces getting their shot to start this year, the team is expecting some tough challenges moving forward. The loss of Ethan Teixeira and Gil Picard last year leave the pitching depth stretched thin, with Junior Ryan Tarasiak and Sophomore Jack Remuck taking over as the No. 1 and 2 pitchers. Some of the best power hitters also graduated last year including Nick Morley, but Sophomore Max Kolifrath and Junior Edwin Cochran will be stepping up into the line up this year.

Injuries have already caused a problem this season for Millbury with starting 3rd baseman Edwin Cochran having to miss yesterday’s game, Junior Hunter Luby has been out for a week with a shoulder injury, and as of yesterday Junior James Crossman made a catch in Right Field that resulted in a broken wrist, which means he is now out for the season. Luckily, the team has the help of Ms. Collins who is always available when a player has an injury. But still, the team is now stretched thin in terms of depth which leaves us with only a few subs. Coach Silvestri has began calling up Junior Varsity players such as freshman Cam Ayotte up to the varsity team.

The 2019 season has already kicked off, with a huge win over SCL C rival, the Oxford Pirates, defeating them 6-5 and then a tough loss to Douglas 2 days later, losing 6-5. On April 10th, the Quaboag Cougars came to Millbury and were defeated 8-2 and Sophomore Jack Remuck pitched a complete game and Junior Brady McCarthy added 2 hits and Junior Billy Flynn had 2 runs. Millbury will play their long time rivals, the Grafton Indians at the end of the season on May 21st, and the always talented Auburn Rockets on May 13th, a week before. The Millbury Woolies are currently at a record of 2-1 with a 2-0 SWCL record and they face off against the Tantasqua Warriors in Tantasqua on April 11th at 3:30 with Sophomore Ryan Foley getting his second start on the year. The road ahead looks challenging but the players and coaches welcome the challenge and are working hard in order to have another great season, despite having a young team with few seniors.
