Last week was the NBA Draft Lottery and for anyone that doesn’t know this is when a select group of NBA teams are in a lottery for the best picks in this years draft. Some teams have better chances than others because it is based off of worse record however sometimes a good team can get a higher pick from a bad team based off of a previous trade that would award the good team the pick. Last night’s Draft Lottery was probably a more interesting one than in previous years because highschool and college basketball sensation Zion Williamson is available to draft this year. Zion is definitely the standout player in the draft but there is a surplus of talent in the draft this year.

The odds were released and the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Phoenix Suns were given the best chances at the first pick or the “Zion pick”. Each had a 14% chance to get the pick however oddly enough the Knicks got the third pick, cleveland got the fifth pick, and Phoenix fell all the way out of the top 5 to the sixth pick. There is and has always been lots of speculation the the lottery is rigged and although I feel like it has been in the past, I think this year they would have been better off rigging it. If the NBA was truly rigged the Lakers would’ve gotten the first pick and teamed Lebron with Zion making many people happy, but people like me never watch the NBA ever again.

The first pick in the draft fell to the New Orleans Pelicans. Personally I think the best decision would be to draft Zion or a player that would make Anthony Davis stay. If they could draft Zion and keep Anthony Davis, they should look to trade Jrue Holiday and a pick for some other assets so they can sign a big name free agent point guard. However it wouldn’t be horrible to keep Jrue Holiday because for the most part he meets the requirements of a middle tier point guard. There is speculation that New Orleans will trade the pick and when the owner of the Pelicans was asked about Zion he deflected and it created for a very awkward moment. To sum up the draft New Orleans is happy, Memphis is thrilled with the second pick, and the Knicks are punching the air that after an absolutely miserable season they missed out on the number one pick.

Now that the draft is set for the moment I have some predictions for how the draft will go. I believe that the Pelicans are going keep first pick and draft Zion Williamson. Originally before the lottery, there was a rumor going around that if the Knicks landed the first pick, the Pelicans would trade Anthony Davis for the first pick. After the Pelicans obtained first pick, Anthony Davis announced that he still wants to leave so there is potential that the pick could still be traded.  With the second pick the Memphis Grizzlies will select Ja Morant and this will hopefully eventually free them from the massive contract they gave to Mike Conley. With the third pick the Knicks are going to draft Zion’s ex teammate RJ Barrett who will probably be the star of their team and will sell tickets. The fourth pick will go to the Lakers who will select DeAndre Hunter from Virginia. With the fifth pick the Cavaliers will select Coby White from UNC in order to build a good backcourt. Next with the sixth pick the Suns will select Darius Garland from Vanderbilt which will also give help to their backcourt. With the 7th pick I think the Bulls will trade it to the Lakers for Lonzo Ball. With the pick I believe the Lakers will select Cam Reddish from Duke. Atlanta will then select Jarrett Culver with the eighth pick. With the ninth pick the Wizards will pick Bruno Fernando out of Maryland to address their needs for a center. Finally with the tenth pick Atlanta will select Rui Hachimura from Gonzaga. I think Atlanta has the best chance to get the most out of this loaded draft class. The other team that gets the most out of this draft class is whoever gets Zion. Overall I think this draft will definitely be a must watch for big basketball fans and this will probably be the most watched draft of all time.
